How long before I can fly home after surgery?
Your surgeon makes the final call. As a general guide, people are usually advised not to fly for about 5 to 7 days after procedures such as breast surgery and liposuction, and 7 to 10 days after facial procedures or tummy tucks. Book your return once your surgeon has advised.

What is the usual guidance?
As a general guide, people are usually advised not to fly for:
- 5 to 7 days after procedures such as breast surgery and liposuction
- 7 to 10 days after facial cosmetic procedures or tummy tucks
Plan to stay long enough to recover before travelling home. For other kinds of surgery, such as weight-loss surgery, ask the surgical team what they advise for you.
Why does my surgeon's advice come first?
General guidance cannot take account of your health, the exact procedure or how your recovery goes. Your surgeon assesses you and decides when they consider you fit to fly, and their advice may be longer than the general guidance.
How should I plan my return flight?
- Ask the surgeon, before you book, how long they recommend you stay and which checks happen before you leave.
- Build some extra time into your plans in case your recovery takes longer.
- Check what your travel insurance says about flying after surgery. See travel insurance for treatment abroad.
- Choose accommodation where you can rest comfortably for the whole recovery period.
Turwel plans travel and accommodation around the timings your surgeon gives, not the other way round.
