Do I need travel insurance for treatment abroad?

Yes, and it is worth choosing carefully. Many standard travel insurance policies do not cover planned treatment abroad, so you may need specialist cover, and you should tell your insurer about your plans. The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) and the EHIC are not valid in Türkiye.

What does standard travel insurance often not cover?

  • Planned treatment abroad
  • Complications of planned surgery

Does my GHIC or EHIC work in Türkiye?

No. The GHIC and EHIC are not valid in Türkiye, so make sure you have travel insurance that covers local treatment and unexpected medical repatriation. This is particularly important if you have a health condition.

What should I check before buying cover?

  • Tell the insurer you are travelling for treatment, and what the treatment is.
  • Ask whether the policy covers complications, extra nights abroad and changes to your flights.
  • Ask whether it covers medical repatriation.
  • Ask the clinic whether it has malpractice insurance and whether that insurance covers you.
  • Keep a copy of the policy and emergency numbers with you while you are away.

Turwel does not sell insurance or give insurance advice, but we can help you put these questions to the clinic. Speak to an insurer or broker about cover for your own situation.
